OUR EXPERIENCE
instinct and reason has particular skills and knowledge in areas around workplace and workforce health and wellbeing. This includes physical health and safety, with a number of projects carried out for Safe Work Australia and State authorities such as Workcover in NSW. It also includes mental health and wellbeing and psychological safety.
instinct and reason has carried out pioneering research in the field of workplace health and wellbeing. This includes research for beyondblue and the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance to help develop and launch Heads Up (choose to open in new tab) http://headsup.org.au/
Our research included a survey of business leaders, managers and owners, and a separate survey among a cross-section of the Australian workforce. The latter survey incorporated choice modelling, an instinct and reason area of expertise. This ‘Employer of Choice’ survey hit the headlines as it demonstrated that a mentally healthy workplace is second only to pay in driving job choices:
and this infographic video of the results produced by beyondblue has had more than 90,000 views:

instinct and reason Director, Paul Vittles said “I have been carrying out workplace research since 1987, and this is the first time we have had clear evidence that a mentally healthy workplace is second only to pay in determining the job choices of employees. Furthermore, both having good positive mental health policies and having an open conversation culture have emerged as crucial drivers of job choices in 2014. We now have a social case and a business case for investing in workplace mental health”.
WHAT IT MEANS FOR CLIENTS
Over the past decade, instinct and reason has carried out a great deal of research for its clients among their employees and some of this has included workplace health and wellbeing issues. We have also gained transferable experience from our work for clients such as the Fair Work Ombudsman.
